Health policy roundtable
In August 2003, CMI and KP¹s Institute for Health Policy co-sponsored a
roundtable discussion, ‘Prevention and Treatment of Obesity: Toward a
Roadmap for Advocacy and Action.' Our co-sponsors were:
The roundtable agenda was to identify priorities for advocacy and action to address the epidemic of overweight and obesity. Representatives from a broad spectrum of providers, consumers, the food industry, health plans, community-based organizations, researchers, analysts, and policymakers generated recommendations in seven areas of concern:
- schools and youth-serving organizations
- work site and employer programs
- community support programs, services, and policies
- community design for healthy eating and active living
- the food industry and food marketing
- health care systems
- communications and public advocacy.
Follow-up from the roundtable includes the translation activities of the physical activity and pending obesity chapters of the CDC Guide to Community Preventive Services. KP also developed policy principles for obesity: supporting evidence-based strategies and actions leading to new findings that can be applied to public policy.
Outside of Kaiser¹s Weight Management Initiative, numerous state and community programs and legislative initiatives address the epidemic of excess weight in the United States. More information is available through Web sites like:
