The Disease Management Association of America (DMAA) recognized Kaiser Permanente’s Care Management Association (KP-CMI) with two awards at its annual conference in October.


KP-CMI Wins DMAA Best Overall Disease Management Program – Managed Care Organization. Accepting the award at the recent Disease Management Association of America Conference are (from left):Russell Ellison, MD, vice president of medical affairs, Sanofi-Aventis (co-winner); Paul Wallace, MD, executive director, KP-CMI; Matt Stiefel, associate executive director, KP-CMI; Michael Kanter, MD, associate medical director, quality and clinical analysis, Southern California Permanente Medical Group. Dr. Wallace also won the Individual DMAA Leadership Award.  

The awards include:

  • DMAA Best Disease Management Program for a Managed Care Organization
    The DMAA gave KP-CMI the award for best disease management program for a managed care organization (MCO). The award recognizes an MCO that has demonstrated excellence in the design, development, implementation, and operation of a disease management program with success demonstrated by favorable outcomes.
  • DMAA Individual Disease Management Leadership Award: Paul Wallace, MD
    The DMAA gave CMI Executive Director Paul Wallace, MD, the individual disease management leadership award. It recognizes an individual who has pioneered the concept of disease management and demonstrated strong leadership and a consistent voice for the industry.The leadership award is presented to an individual who has made a personal contribution and has demonstrated openness, sharing, and collaboration in work with others.

Other CMI presentations at DMAA Conference
Also at the DMAA Conference in October, CMI Associate Executive Director Matt Stiefel presented "The Value of Disease Management: Stakeholder Perspectives."

KP-CMI's Leslee Budge gave a presentation on the "Development of Tools for the Electronic Health Record to Support Population Care Management Programs."

KP-CMI and HealthMedia Inc.'s work on behavior change using tailored online health messages (the THeME project that won the Koop Award; see related story) was also the topic of a DMAA workshop.

Work from CMI staff David Mosen and Michael Johnson was presented at DMAA Conference poster sessions. Mosen's work focused on Health Impact Assessment. Johnson's work centered on predictive modeling.
