Scott Young, MD, has been named Senior Medical Director and Co-executive Director of the Care Management Institute. He will begin his duties in late July.
Dr. Young will serve as CMI's Co-executive Director with Carolyn Days Mustille, who also serves as CMI's Vice President, Quality Systems.
"We are thrilled to introduce Dr. Scott Young to our friends across Kaiser Permanente," says Jed Weissberg, MD, associate executive director of quality and performance improvement for the Permanente Federation. "Scott joins us from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), where he was the Director for Health Information Technology Programs. As such, he is uniquely suited to help us apply all of our learnings in chronic condition management, population care, and engagement with members in our new KP HealthConnect (KPHC) electronic world. Scott has been avidly absorbing our organizational culture while becoming familiar with the programs, projects and people within CMI. The new leadership structure for CMI accurately and appropriately reflects our organizational partnership and joint sponsorship for the critical and impactful learnings and initiatives sponsored by our CMI staff and regionally based colleagues."
"We anticipate that Scott and Carolyn will bring renewed focus and relevance to our population management work, to the betterment of our members and program," says Alide Chase, vice president for Quality and Service.
Most recently at AHRQ, Dr. Young has been the director for health information technology programs and research, as well as AHRQ Representative for the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Response. He also previously served as the AHRQ lead for the Medicare Modernization Act Implementation Team and prior to that as senior clinical advisor for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). He joined AHRQ in 2002.
"It is my distinct pleasure to join the Kaiser-Permanente team," says Dr. Young. "For many years I've viewed KP as an important and vital leader in our nation's continued effort to provide efficient, safe, and high quality health care. KP has clearly led the way by emphasizing health care quality, integrating health IT, promoting preventive services, and controlling costs."
"I'm looking forward to working with Carolyn and the entire CMI team in strengthening the Institute's ties with our regional and national partners," Dr. Young adds.
"I am so fortunate to have a partner like Scott for CMI. He brings a wealth of experience in areas that will continue to make CMI an important contributor to our health care delivery as we move into the era of KPHealthConnect," says Carolyn Days Mustille. "Scott has nation-leading experience in programs and demonstrations aimed at utilizing IT as an integral component of improvements in health care efficiency, patient safety, and quality of care."
